I "Village People" in Italia (a Viareggio)

L’idea di formare i Village People prese vita nella testa di Jacques Morali quando, in una sera del lontano 1977 in un club del Greenwich Village di New York, assistette all’esibizione di Felipe Rose vestito di tutto punto come un Indiano d’America, con tanto di ruota di penne dietro la testa. Quella sera nella sua fervida immaginazione s’accese un’altra scintilla che si rivelò poi decisamente vincente: creare un gruppo tutto composto da vari tipi di stereotipi del maschio americano. E forse qualche sollecitazione gli era venuta anche dall’assidua frequentazione di quel Greenwich Village di allora, crocevia di razze, persone e personaggi volutamente esagerati ed estremi. In quegli anni Morali e l’inseparabile Harry Belolo erano fra i più grandi e affermati produttori di musica disco -basti citare la Ritchie Family, loro creazione, che con “The best disco in town” e l’album “Arabian nights” aveva spopolato in ogni angolo del globo proprio tra il 1976 e il 1977- e spesso lui si recava nei famosi club-off del Greenwich o comunque di New York a cercare nuovi talenti da lanciare e nuove idee.
Infatti, qualche sera dopo al “Wiz” di Broadway, sempre con quell’idea fissa in testa, Morali assistette all’esibizione di Victor Willis, un cantante-attore che si mostrava al pubblico vestito da soldato ed il suo progetto cominciò a prendere forma: dopo l’indiano ed il soldato furono trovati altri tre elementi a cui fare indossare i panni dell’operaio-muratore, del poliziotto e del leather-man, l’uomo tutto in pelle e barba classico stereotipo del mondo gay.
Il gioco era fatto e i ‘”Village People” erano nati.
Il loro primo singolo fu ‘San Francisco’ nel 1977 a cui seguì “Macho Man” nel 1978.
Negli anni fra il 1977 e il 1987 hanno venduto qualcosa come oltre 65 milioni di dischi –fonte l’americana ‘Dance Music Report, 1987’- ma il loro più grande successo è stato e rimane “YMCA”, diventato in breve tempo un inno in tutte le discos del pianeta e ancora oggi tra i brani sempre trasmessi in qualsiasi discoteca che si rispetti. Poi sono venuti anche i successi di “Go West”, “Can’t stop the music”, “In the Navy” o la più relativamente recente “Sex over the phone” -1987- con la quale si esibirono al nostro Festival di Sanremo.
Nei primissimi anni di successo i loro concerti erano aperti nientemeno che da star come Madonna non ancora dea dell’olimpo canoro e facevano il tutto esaurito ovunque nel mondo. Su di loro fu anche ‘costruito’ un film ‘Can’t stop the music’ nel 1980, una specie di biografia giocata sulle loro prime audizioni, i concerti e le discoteche. Inverosimile ma divertente per i chiassosi e colorati costumi e per le scene kitsch e le incredibili coreografie, la pellicola fu diretta da Nancy Walker ed interpretata anche da Steven Guttemberg.
I Village People sono inoltre famosi per i cambi di formazione: si calcola che all'interno del gruppo siano transitati in tutti questi anni una quindicina di elementi. Moltissimi sono stati i tour in tutto il mondo, dai quali hanno ricevuto molto più che dai dischi realizzati e pubblicati dopo le grandi hits della loro prima decade di successo planetario.
Nel 2001 il leather-man del gruppo Glenn Huges morì di cancro dopo una lunga lotta contro la malattia e per la band è stato un colpo durissimo. Huges volle essere sepolto con addosso l’uniforme in pelle che lo aveva reso famoso e ‘personaggio’ in tutto il mondo.
Lo scorso anno sono stati impegnati nell’ultima parte del “Farewell tour” di Cher in Australia e dal maggio di quest’anno sono in giro per l’America e per il mondo nuovamente impegnati in un tour che toccherà anche l’Italia nell’unica data del 17 agosto a Viareggio nell’ambito del Mardi-Gras Friendly Versilia.
Da non perdere assolutamente, io ci sarò.
